00:00:00: Hello everyone, welcome to the Live Through Jesus podcast with Courtney Gilmore.

00:00:05: On this episode The Repentant Heart.

00:00:08: This is Second Chronicles Twelfth If you don't prepare yourself beforehand decide ahead of time.

00:00:23: I am going do these types things These type thing that i'm not gonna do.

00:00:29: Then it's much easier when haven't thought about at all to just go ahead and go with the flow.

00:00:36: Go with a crowd or do the thing that you want to do.

00:00:39: it may not even have anything to do With another person pressuring You, It May Just Be That YOU WANT TO DO THIS THING AND YOU HAD NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT IT BEFORE, YOU HIDEN'T DETERMINED THAT YOU WOULDN'T AND AT THE MOMENT IT SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD IDEA.

00:00:56: YOU DON'T REALLY CARE AND YOU GO AHEAD AND DO IT.

00:00:58: BUT IF YOU HAVE MADE A DECISION BEFOREHAND THIS IS JUST SOMETHING I DON'T DO Then it makes it a lot easier and if you say it to someone else Eventually people realize she doesn't do that And then they don't ask you.

00:01:15: Oftentimes, They Don't Do It Around You.

00:01:18: so its not a temptation Its Not Even A Problem.

00:01:21: The reason I bring all of this up is because That Is Why the Person In Our Story Today Ends Up overall being a bad king because it says that he did not prepare his heart to seek God.

00:01:40: And so, Because He Did Not Determine Beforehand I am going To Follow God!

00:01:47: I'm gonna learn what His rules are and i'm going to follow them.

00:01:51: then He didn't.

00:01:53: then everything was just on a case-by-case basis.

00:01:56: And so he had to make his mind up every time, whether He's going do what He is supposed to or wasn't doing and sometimes felt bad about it changed His mind in changes ways...and sometimes He didn't!

00:02:10: So overall, He wasn't good king.

00:02:13: He did not follow God.

00:02:15: And so if you will remember last week, I entitled the lesson The Unrepentant Heart.

00:02:21: and that is because when Jeroboam was faced with his sin he was completely indifferent.

00:02:27: It's like yeah sorry That's the way it's gonna go.

00:02:32: He didn't change one single thing even though a son died Even though God told him that His dynasty wasn't going to last...he didn't care Kept on doing whatever we wanted to do and so he faced consequences, and God didn't give him any mercy.

00:02:49: But Rehoboam the king in the south is who we're going to talk about today—and He did have a repentant heart at least in this one instance!

00:03:00: And so it tells us in II Chronicles twelve that when Rehuboam had established and strengthened his kingdom then and all of Israel with him.

00:03:17: And back up in Second Chronicles eleven seventeen it says that this was for the first three years, For the first Three Years he followed In The Ways Of His Father & his Grandfather Solomon & David...and He Obeyed The Lord and Did What God Wanted Him To Do Follow God's Laws.

00:03:37: But in the fourth year....he Began to Stray and so did everyone else in Israel.

00:03:43: this same story is told in first Kings.

00:03:46: fourteen and so second Chronicles is our base passage.

00:03:51: but this part in First Kings, in First King's fourteen twenty-two to twenty four it tells us further what What their sin was, what it is that they actually did in this fourth year of Rehoboam's reign.

00:04:07: That turned against God.

00:04:09: and so It says the people of Judah did evil In the sight Of The Lord And They provoked him to Jealousy With Their Sins Which They Committed More Than All Their Fathers Had Done For.

00:04:20: They too Built for Themselves High Places Memorial Stones An Asherum On Every high Hill an Under every Luxuriant Tree.

00:04:31: There were also male prostitutes in the land, and they committed all of the same abominations that the Lord had dispossessed before them.

00:04:40: And so it wasn't just that they quit following God—that would have been bad enough!

00:04:46: You know?

00:04:46: This is something God actually warned them about he said in Deuteronomy eight eleven to twenty.

00:04:55: He says beware that you don't forget the Lord your god by not keeping his commandments and judgments and statutes Lest.

00:05:03: when you have eaten, and you are full And When You Have Built Beautiful Houses and You Live In Them?

00:05:09: And When Your Herds & Your Flocks Multiply and Your Silver and Your Gold Multiply.

00:05:13: Everything That You Have Multiplies!

00:05:16: When Your Heart Is Lifted Up and you forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the terrible wilderness, where are the fiery serpents in?

00:05:24: the scorpions were?

00:05:25: And the thirsty land was.

00:05:28: You forget that God brought water from the flinty rock when we're living there!

00:05:33: He fed us with manna because he didn't have any

00:05:35: food.".

00:05:36: When you forget all this... ...and say to yourself Your own power has given you this wealth then you need to remember The God is the one that gives you the power to get that wealth in first place.

00:05:49: And if you don't remember that, then it will be...that YOU WILL FORGET THE LORD YOUR GOD AND YOU WILL FOLLOW OTHER GODS and you will serve them & you will worship them.

00:05:59: I testify against you this day That surely you will perish as the nations which the Lord destroyed before you, so ye shall perish because ye were not obedient to the voice of the

00:06:09: LORD.".

00:06:10: And so God warned them about this exact thing.

00:06:13: He warned them that once they got settled and established—that they might start thinking that...you know…they did all of this!

00:06:21: —and forget about God.

00:06:24: That would have been bad enough if they would have just, I don't need God anymore.

00:06:29: You know?

00:06:29: I've got everything i want and not even necessarily like...they just DON'T go to god because they don't NEED anything but they FORGET TO GO TO HIM BECAUSE THEY DONT NEED ANYTHING.

00:06:40: THAT'S BAD ENOUGH AND THAT'S SOMETHING that probably we all experienced in our lives at some point where WE JUST DON'T GO TO GOD.

00:06:48: THAT IS HOW IT STARTED.

00:06:51: BUT THEN THEY STARTED following other gods and it says that this provoked god to jealousy more than anything their fathers had done before them.

00:07:01: And in describing how they were worshiping other gods, its just horrible!

00:07:06: It's said that...they built worshipped sites and sacred pillars..and ashram which is the Canaanite goddess of fertility, they worshipped her and they had male cult prostitutes.

00:07:22: So male prostituts that were basically ritualistically having sex as some sort of you know worship to this fertility Goddess so she would bless them with children or whatever.

00:07:40: And so... They've gotten way off the path right?

00:07:44: And so it says in verse two that because of this unfaithfulness, In the fifth year... So the first three years they were good.

00:07:53: The fourth year They strayed away from God and worship other gods!

00:07:57: And so in the fifth Year god allows the king From Egypt to come and attack them?

00:08:05: It says he came with twelve hundred chariots sixty thousand horsemen and countless Egyptian foot soldiers along with troops from Libya, which is a land that's somewhere south of Egypt.

00:08:22: He begins capturing all of the fortified cities from the south until he reaches Jerusalem, and they know he's coming.

00:08:30: And so Rehoboam is there meeting with his officials saying what are we going to do about Shishak?

00:08:36: The king of Egypt coming against us...and while The prophet Shamiah comes to them and he says, this is what God has told me.

00:08:50: He says that since you have forsaken him... ...he will forsake YOU to

00:08:55: shishak.".

00:08:56: That's kind of fitting right?

00:08:58: Can't really say much about that!

00:09:00: You turned away from ME so I'm gonna turn away from YOU.

00:09:03: And it says when the people heard THIS they all said THE LORD IS RIGHTEOUS basically saying we're wrong He's right, and whatever he chooses to do with us is also right.

00:09:19: There's nothing we can say about

00:09:20: it.".

00:09:21: And when God saw this—when he saw that they humbled themselves —it says that...he tells Shamiah to tell them ...that because they've humbled themselves …He won't destroy them…and He will grant them some deliverance.

00:09:39: My wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak.

00:09:44: Nevertheless, they will be his servants that they may distinguish my service from the service of The Kingdom Of Nations.

00:09:54: Also fitting right?

00:09:56: This makes full sense.

00:09:58: you don't want to serve me anymore.

00:10:00: well then You can serve them and Then you'll be able To Distinguish the difference between being My servant And Being a Servant of Someone Else someone That Doesn't Care About You Someone is only in it for themselves and someone that's not going to treat you right.

00:10:17: We'll talk more about that

00:10:18: later.".

00:10:20: And so, it says Shishak came up against Jerusalem... ...and he took away the treasures of The House Of The Lord.. ..and the treasures at The King's house.

00:10:32: He took everything!

00:10:35: He even carried away the gold shields Solomon had made.

00:10:38: Then Rehoboam had to replace them with bronze ones because they don't have any more gold.

00:10:43: And so this is so sad, right?

00:10:45: If you think back to when we studied the temple all of the golden and silver treasures that he had stored in there.

00:10:53: They took them all...and ALL THE ONES THAT ARE IN THE KING'S HOUSE AND EVEN THE GOLDEN SHIELDS THAT SOLOMON HAD MADE AND NOW THEY DON'T HAVE ANY GOLD LEFT AND SO THEY HAVE TO MAKE THEIR SHIELDS OUT OF BRONCE.

00:11:05: This was the punitive part of their consequences but There was also a lesson in it, right?

00:11:14: The next set of consequences gave them the lesson.

00:11:17: Next set of consequence says now you're going to be a vassal state and we'll talk more about that later too.

00:11:24: So all this happened but the conditions in Judah were good.

00:11:33: God let them live in peace And everything worked out basically.

00:11:39: and it says that when Rehoboam humbled himself, God forgave him turned his anger away from Him.

00:11:46: Then the end of the chapter tells us that just summarizes his reign.

00:11:53: It says, he was forty-one years old whenever He became king and forty six years old when Egypt invaded And then he reigned over Judah for another twelve years.

00:12:04: So His total reign Was for seventeen Years...he died When he was fifty eight years Old..and he was buried in The City Of David abhija or abhijam.

00:12:16: they have different names for him in the different books because, uh...they spoke some sort of a different language by the time that he wrote The Chronicles and so um.. They had different names from people but it was just small variations on their names.

00:12:40: then it just tells us that um during these twelve years he was in constant battle with Jeroboam and it says, all of his acts as king are written in the records of Shamiah the prophet and Eda the seer.

00:12:57: And in The Chronicles Of The Kings Of

00:13:00: Israel.".

00:13:01: Then...the very last thing about him is that He did evil because he did not prepare his heart to seek the Lord.

00:13:12: Basically, if you had to say at the end of His life was He a good king or bad King?

00:13:16: You're like...He is a Bad King!

00:13:18: He didn't follow God most of time.

00:13:21: So when Jeroboam confronted with this sin....he totally unrepentant and as result his son died and whole family died in dishonor And God didn't have any mercy on him.

00:13:36: But when Rehoboam and the people of Judah were confronted with their sin, they humbled themselves admitted that they were wrong.

00:13:46: Declared that God was right so that they would accept his judgment whatever it was.

00:13:52: And god gave them mercy.

00:13:55: They weren't defeated...they had to give away their treasures.

00:14:05: becoming his servants, was supposed to remind them of the five hundred and twenty years before whenever they were actual slaves there in Egypt.

00:14:18: It had been five hundred-and-twenty since the exodus of their fathers from Egypt as slaves there... And God wasn't ever going allow him be captured or taken back to Egypt as a slave.

00:14:31: but he did want taste of what it was like to be under Egyptian rule, just to remind them you don't like that.

00:14:41: And not only do you not like that but there's a reason that you like serving

00:14:47: me.".

00:14:48: You see when God took them out their bondage from the Pharaoh in Egypt immediately he told him now I'm your master Now I'm going to give you the rules.

00:15:02: I'm gonna tell you how to set up your kingdom and You're going?

00:15:07: To follow me.

00:15:07: now, you're going to do the things that I tell you to Do.

00:15:11: but That's good for you because I have your best interest at heart.

00:15:16: And these people did not.

00:15:18: and so when he started with his ten commandments He said I am the Lord your God who took you out of the oppression, of the Egyptians and brought to this new promised land.

00:15:32: And now when you get there these are things that I want you do.

00:15:36: The first two laws he gave them were Do not have any other gods before me.

00:15:41: don't make any images to worship.

00:15:43: They had obviously just broken both those laws.

00:15:47: Then next law was Do not take my name in vain And the last ones all had to do with how they related each other, but The fourth law reminded them of How much better a ruler he was than?

00:16:02: uh...the one that They have been under because That Pharaoh made Them work Constantly and get none Of the profit.

00:16:13: All it Was for him all their Work all of Their Exhaustion every bit of It was for him.

00:16:20: As a matter of fact, I even want to read you just a little bit of how they started to become slaves there because it tells you that the purpose was to oppress them and make things difficult for them.

00:16:34: this king did not care about them at all.

00:16:38: It says There arose a new King in Egypt who didn't know Joseph And he said These people, the children of Israel are more and mightier than we are.

00:16:50: Come let us deal shrewdly with them lest they multiply And it happen in the event of a war that They also join our enemies and fight against Us.

00:17:08: They built for Pharaoh, supply cities Pitham and Ramses.

00:17:13: But the more they afflicted them The More they multiplied And grew!

00:17:17: They were in dread of the Children Of Israel.

00:17:20: So the Egyptians made the children of Israel serve with rigor.

00:17:24: They made their lives bitter with hard bondage in mortar brick and an all manner of service in the field.

00:17:31: All there's service in which they make them serve was with rigor.

00:17:34: So, they were purposefully trying to Make their life difficult so that we're so exhausted when I got home.

00:17:41: they couldn't have any kids And this did not work.

00:17:47: But that was their entire purpose.

00:17:49: And you see how everything they built, it's for the government.

00:17:53: They didn't get any of that profit.

00:17:55: Everything is for other king.

00:17:57: and all of this was purposefully to oppress them Whereas with God It's complete opposite.

00:18:05: Not only did He not make them work all time but he mandated at least one day a week.

00:18:13: That was the fourth commandment.

00:18:15: The Fourth Commandment said You must rest one day a week.

00:18:21: Not only that, but their prophets were their own and the only thing they owed God was worshiped in

00:18:29: faithfulness.".

00:18:30: And so by making them a vassal state to this same exact country who had oppressed them as slaves... ...God is trying to remind him he's best master!

00:18:42: So then they would recommit themselves and follow Him faithfully.

00:18:46: And unfortunately, Rehoboam did not do that.

00:18:50: He repented in this instance but he didn't continue to walk humbly with his God because it says overall... by his laws, then he would have been fine.

00:19:19: But He never made that decision!

00:19:22: Every situation he was faced with... ...was a different time of him having to make this decision over and over again And so overall....he didn't follow God.

00:20:39: He created us, so he actually is our master whether we acknowledge it or not.

00:20:44: But... ...he wants to acknowledge it!

00:20:49: He wants us to willingly submit ourselves to him and the thing is that he isn't a power-hungry slave driving kind of Master The kind who demands service for only his benefit into our detriment.

00:21:04: That's what the A king was like an Egypt, but that's not the kind of master God is.

00:21:12: He requires obedience because he loves us and it's to our benefit if we serve him.

00:21:19: Deuteronomy ten twelve-to-thirteen says now Israel what does the Lord your god require you?

00:21:26: But to fear the lord your guide and walk in his ways And love Him and serve the Lord Your God with all and his statutes, which I command you today for your good.

00:21:40: You see he is like a loving father that gives rules to his kids because he wants us to have a good life...because he wants not to suffer consequences..he wants us be safe....he want's us do what it right.....he wants this to BE GOOD PEOPLE!

00:21:56: And so he sets these rules FOR THAT PURPOSE NOT BECAUSE HE'S JUST TRYING TO BE ruling over us.

00:22:06: And not only do we receive guidance from him so that we can be good people, but We receive so much more.

00:22:16: He provides for our needs.

00:22:18: he cares for us when were sick and wounded When we're upset his patient is kind gives us righteousness justice mercy grace forgiveness.

00:22:31: He grants rest for the weary and peace like nothing on this earth could ever give us.

00:22:37: And love that we can't even comprehend, and ultimately he saves our souls and gives us an inheritance in heaven forever within.

00:22:48: so what better master Could We serve than The One That Created Us?

00:22:54: Calls Us His Children?

00:22:56: I mean Seriously What.

00:22:58: What Better Person To Serve than our God.

00:23:03: So I want to read you several verses that talk about what type of god we serve.

00:23:11: this is Psalm one oh three and i'm going to read nineteen verses because it covers almost all those things that I just said, It says bless the Lord O my soul And All That Is Within Me.

00:23:25: Bless His Holy Name Bless The Lord Oh My Soul and forget not all his benefits.

00:23:33: He's the one that forgives our iniquities, and heals All Our

00:23:37: Diseases.".

00:23:39: That doesn't mean he heals every single disease.

00:23:42: it means that ALL THE DISEASES THAT ARE HEALED are healed by him!

00:23:45: He is The One Who Does It.

00:23:47: He is the One who redeems your life from destruction.

00:23:50: He crowns you with loving kindness & tender mercies.

00:23:54: He satisfies Your Mouth With Good Things so that Your Youth Is Renewed Like The Eagles.

00:23:59: so he provides for our needs, for physical needs.

00:24:02: The Lord executes righteousness and justice For all who are oppressed.

00:24:07: He made known his ways to Moses And is axed To the children of Israel.

00:24:21: For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his mercy towards those who fear him.

00:24:35: As far as the east is from the west So far has he removed our transgressions From us!

00:24:42: As a father pities His children, so The Lord pities Those Who Fear Him.

00:24:48: for He knows Our frame-He remembers That We Are But

00:24:51: Dust.".

00:24:52: As for man, his days are like grass.

00:24:55: as a flower of the field so he flourishes For the wind passes over it and its gone And Its place remembers It no more.

00:25:03: But The mercy Of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him.

00:25:09: In His righteousness To His children's Children To such as keep His covenant into Those Who remember His commandments and do them.

00:25:19: The Lord has established His throne in heaven and his kingdom rules over all.

00:25:26: But that's okay, we don't mind that he rolls over us right because He does all of these things.

00:25:32: Don't forget the benefits of serving Him All Of These Things.

00:25:38: Matthew eleven twenty-eight to thirty says Come To Me All You Who Are Weary And Heavy-Laden.

00:25:45: I Will Give You Rest.

00:25:47: Take My Yoke Upon You And Learn From Me For I'm gentle and lowly at heart and you will find rest for your souls.

00:25:54: For my yoke is easy, And My burden is

00:25:57: light.".

00:25:58: He takes our burdens away gives us a break.

00:26:01: he gives us rest.

00:26:04: John fourteen twenty seven peace.

00:26:06: I leave with You my piece.

00:26:08: i give to You not as the world gifts To You do I Give.

00:26:12: let Not Your trouble-your heart be troubled neither Let it Be afraid.

00:26:17: It's like I gave you A kind of Peace that you can't Find anywhere else.

00:26:21: Ephesians three-nineteen, know the love of Christ which passes knowledge that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

00:26:30: He's like You can't understand the depth of God's Love but That just shows how much he actually has right?

00:26:39: First Peter one Three to four.

00:26:42: bless me The god and father who according to his abundant mercy Has begotten us again To a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled.

00:26:57: And that does not fade away.

00:26:59: reserved in heaven for

00:27:00: you.".

00:27:03: This is what it's like being God's child.

00:27:07: Matthew seven-seven two eleven says ask...and It'll be given to You.

00:27:12: Seek & You will find.

00:27:14: Knock & It Will Be Open To You.

00:27:16: Everyone who asks receives And he who seeks finds, and to He Who knocks it will be opened.

00:27:26: What man is there among you?

00:27:28: If his son asks for bread we'll give him a stone or ask for fish and gives them a serpent.

00:27:35: so if You then being evil know how to Give good gifts to your children How much more Will the Father who isn't having give Good things To those who Ask Him?

00:27:45: This Is The Kind of Master We Serve the kind that calls us his child.

00:27:50: This says we can ask him for anything and he will give us, The things are good for us you know?

00:27:55: Kids.

00:27:56: kids can't ask their parents For just Anything in there.

00:27:59: parent say sure no problem but Kids can ask their parents for the things that they want, and if the parents believe it is what's good to them then they will give it to him.

00:28:11: The thing is God always has it so he'll give us all of those things we asked about when something like this comes in handy.

00:28:21: What a better person to serve than that!

00:28:24: So make your conscious decision today to submit yourself Acknowledge that he's the one who sets his standards and if you deviate from those standards then your'e wrong.

00:28:38: If YOU will make a commitment NOW, Then whenever you're confronted with a choice You'll be much more likely to make the right one.

00:28:48: But IF you don't And you are confronted with your sin instead Than you would be MUCH MORE LIKELY to admit That you were the one thats wrong And submit yourself to God's righteousness Because...You've already done THAT!

00:29:00: You've already accepted that he is the authority and you have prepared your heart to seek him.

00:29:08: So last couple of verses.

00:29:20: Joshua twenty four fourteen to fifteen says fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity And in truth, and put away.

00:29:27: The gods which your fathers served on the other side Of the river of Egypt serve the lord.

00:29:33: if it seems evil To you to serve the Lord then choose for yourself who?
